1. Introduction to BOINC BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing) is an open-source distributed computing platform that allows scientists to harness idle computational resources worldwide for scientific research. Through BOINC, individuals can contribute their computer’s processing power to various scientific projects, collectively advancing research. 2. Overview of BOINC Projects Milkyway@home Project Milkyway@home explores the history of our galaxy by analyzing stars in the Galactic Halo. This includes the search for elusive dark matter. The research involves mapping the structures of stars orbiting the Milky Way, many of which are “tidal debris streams” or dwarf galaxies being pulled apart by our Galaxy’s gravitational field. The orbits, shapes, and compositions of these dwarf galaxies provide crucial insights into our Galaxy’s history and the distribution of dark matter. In this project, we focus on number fields — subsets of complex numbers containing the root of a given polynomial and closed under addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division (except division by 0). Specifically, we are interested in imprimitive degree 10 fields (decic fields) corresponding to certain degree 10 polynomials. The primary goal is to find the finite set of fields for various sets of primes, while the secondary goal is to determine the set of “minimum discriminant” imprimitive decic fields for a specified bound (B=1.2×10¹¹). You can participate by downloading and running a free program on your computer. The project operates without any funding.
